Improbable Fiction, 24th to 27th March, 19:45
By Alan Ayckbourn. Six aspiring authors meet on a Winter's evening
to discuss their work. Among them are writers of historical romances
and children's literature who are finding it difficult to start
writing, and a crime writer who can't stop. A creator of extremely
complicated science fiction, a librettist without a musical partner
and the Writers' Circle chairman, who produces instruction booklets.
The chairman attempts to get the group out of a rut by suggesting
that they collaborate on a piece of writing, an idea that is
received without enthusiasm. However, as the meeting draws to a
close there is a clap of thunder and then... A zany and imaginative
play full of sharp comedy and affectionate satire.
Confusions, 19th to 22nd May, 19:45
Confusions is the title of a set of five short
plays. Julie Utley, the director, intends to present four of the
five. The plays themselves deal riotously, but with sharply pointed
undertones, the human dilemma of loneliness. They are:
Mother Figure: a mother who is unable to escape from baby
talk. Gosforth's Fete: best laid plans doomed to
failure. Between Mouthfuls: infidelities exposed
over dinner. Talk in the Park: five self-immolated
characters on park benches. This production is the culmination of a
series of workshops offered to our members who have had little
previous experience of performance on stage. We would like to thank
all those trainers (and particularly Chris Harris who worked
tirelessly to get this off the ground) for their time and expertise
coupled with their ability to cajole and encourage all those budding
actors. The results of which mean they are ready to take part in
this forthcoming production.

Cold Comfort Farm, 13th to 17th July, 19:45
A classic of its kind, a dazzling parody of the earthy, melodramatic
novels of the period. Flora Poste has been expensively educated to
do everything but earn her own living. When she is orphaned at
twenty, she decides her only option is to go and live with her
relatives, the Starkadders, at Cold Comfort Farm. What relatives,
though: Judith, alone in her grief; raving old Ada Doom, who once
saw something nasty in the woodshed; Amos, called by God; Seth,
smouldering with sex; and Elfine, who just needs a little polish.
Flora feels it incumbent upon her to bring order into the chaos. And
she turns out to be remarkably good at it.
Our Country's Good, 12th to 16th October, 19:45
Sydney, Australia 1788. A young married lieutenant is directing
rehearsals of the first play ever to be staged in Australia. With
only two copies of the text, a cast of convicts, and one leading
lady who is about to be hanged, conditions are hardly ideal. This is
one of Timberlake Wertenbaker's best-loved plays.
