Last production
Pack of Lies, 16th to 19th November 2011
A play by Hugh Whitmore. This production is a real tear jerker -
based on a true story of a normal family who get wrapped up in a spy
scandal involving their best friends Helen and Peter Kroger. Bob and
Barbara Jackson, and their daughter Julie live a normal suburban
life in Ruislip. One evening they are visited by a man calling
himself Mr Stewart who introduces himself as a policeman from
Scotland Yard.. He tells the Jacksons about a suspicious character
man they wish to question and believe that he may be in the area. As
a result, they would like to use the Jacksons' house as a look out
post during the coming weekend to see if he does in fact come to
Ruislip. They are told not to mention this to anyone, not even their
close friends and family. Tensions rise as Barbara slowly begins to
realise that the police are not only looking for a suspicious man,
but are also watching her best friends Helen and Peter Kroger who
are suspected of being Russian spies. Unable to accept that her best
friend could possibly be involved in such a high profile scandal,
she is torn between loyalty to her country and loyalty to her
friend. Although (to coin a phrase) the names have been changed to
protect the innocent, the basic facts of this play are true and make
a truly compelling tale.
