Playing on the Radio, 9th September 2011
An evening of staged play readings – just like you hear on the
radio! It features two plays. The first is Sentenced,
a thought-provoking drama by the Players’ very own award-winning
in-house playwright, Jane Brough. The second is Lunch Hour,
a ground-breaking Sixties-set one-act play by John Mortimer.
Sentenced is about a man who is arrested for the rape and
murder of a young girl 30 years ago, throwing his family in friends
into disarray. His daughter is unsure if he did it while his wife is
certain he did not but doesn’t trust the legal system. Her best
friend doesn’t trust anything or anyone in Cameron’s Britain. So,
innocent or guilty? If he is found guilty what will be his sentence
and, chillingly, what will be theirs? This is Jane’s second play.
Her first, Nearer to Shakespeare, performed by the
Players in 2008, was one of the four winners in last year’s Raising
Voices competition for new writers run by the Watermill Theatre.
Jane’s prize was the opportunity to have her work performed as a
‘rehearsed reading’ by professional actors at the Berkshire venue.
Mortimer’s play, Lunch Hour, was originally written
for radio before transferring to the West End and later to the big
screen. The story concerns a couple who have started an affair at
work and hope to take it further by booking a hotel room near Kings
Cross over their lunch hour. Their liaison takes an unusual turn…
