Thérèse Raquin, 24th to 27th March, 19:30
By Leslie Sands adapted from the novel by Émile Zola. Zola's classic
thriller is a grippingly suspenseful tale of adultery and murder.
This adaptation of the 19th Century novel adds a special twist to
Zola's original ending. It is a tale of retribution and provides a
penetrating study of sexual obsession and guilt. The play tells the
story of the secret affair between Therese Raquin and her husband's
best friend, Laurent, and reveals the strength of the passion which
incites them to murder. The murder, however, leads to neither
happiness nor liberation, but to the destruction of their
relationship and their eventual downfall. Plunging straight into the
passionate relationship between Therese and the artist, Laurent, the
play compresses the carefully constructed preamble to the central
crime, the couple pass from a stimulating clandestine indulgence
through a chilling climax to the wastes of destructive
circumspection.
Peer Gynt, 7th to 10th April, 21:00 at the
OFS Studio, Oxford
Devised by the company, based on the play by Henrik Ibsen. A
multimedia adaptation of Ibsen’s Peer Gynt, using
movement, music, soundscapes and projected imagery to tell the story
of a fantasist who lives a life based on avoidance. A journey
through nightmares and adventures, from youth to old age. Peer Gynt
is the first production that ADC have created for the Oxfringe
festival.
An Experiment with an Air Pump, 14th to 17th July,
19:30
By Shelagh Stephenson. This tension filled and emotionally powerful
play is inspired by the painting An Experiment on a Bird in the
Air Pump by Joseph Wright. Two groups of characters are in the
same house but two hundred years apart. In 1799 on the eve of a new
century, the house buzzes with scientific experiments, furtive
romance and farcical amateur dramatics. In 1999 in a world of
scientific chaos, cloning and genetic engineering, the cellar of the
house reveals a dark secret buried for 200 years. The play explores
changes in gender roles and the moral questions surrounding
scientific breakthroughs. It is also a fantastic detective story
with a heartbreaking sting in its tail.
